I’ve finished removing more on the bike and have posted documents about how I did the work here.
- 18 BMW 1983 R100RS Remove Exhaust System
- 23 BMW 1983 R100RS Remove Transmission
- 11 BMW 1983 R100RS Remove Engine Top End
I also made a short video showing how to remove the top end.
VIDEO: 1983 BMW R100RS Remove Engine Top End
At this point, disassembly is almost done, and the real work begins; repair, rebuild and refinishing all the components of the bike.
Great video, Brook. Do you have a video of the reassembly? Particularly the sealing of the header to the engine block (with the large o-ring, two small o-rings and the sealant?
Hi Adam,
There is not much to show as assembly is the reverse of disassembly. You use NO sealant as the compression ring creates a gas tight seal.
Here is a link showing the assembly of a new exhaust system on a different year/model airhead, but it’s the same procedure for the 1983 RS bike.

I hope that helps.
Best.
Brook.
Thanks, Brook- I appreciate the response. Trying to fix a bunch of oil leaks that appear to be coming from the cylinder head, the gasket and the push rod seals. Hoping doing the replacement that you walked us through stops the leaks.
Hi Adam,
Wishing you success on the project.
Best.
Brook.
