After completing this work, most of the disassembly down to the frame is complete as I also removed the rear sub-frame and muffler that is attached to it.
All I have left to do is remove the air box, transmission and the engine from the frame.
You can read about how I do this work and watch a short YouTube video summarizing the work here.

Love following along to these builds. Quick question – what is your cleaning process for the aluminum parts (rear drive shown here)? It looks great and I’m struggling to get my R90 to not look 80yrs old…
Hi Stephen,
This link shows all about how I refinish parts.

I hope this helps.

Ah very good! Thanks!
Hi Brook.
When removing my ’83 G/S gearbox, I always loosen the four bolts that connect the drive shaft to the gearbox first. Only then do I remove the rear wheel. This allows me to use the rear brake to lock up the drive shaft/gearbox.
I also find this works better during the reinstallation.
Cheers
Marcel,
Yes, that technique works well for me too. That said, I wanted to see if I just put the bike in 1st gear it would provide enough resistance to remove the drive shaft bolts. It turns out that technique works as well.
Best.
Brook.
