I published this document to show how I repair, refinish and paint parts on this project. It contains links to other documents as well as original material. I will be adding to it as I progress with the project.
I just added how I refinished the front engine cover that had a lot of heavy corrosion on it.
I hope this information is useful.
Thanks very much for this video, and for the charity project you are supporting. I clean the way you do, then I use 400 grade paper to wet sand the clean engine block, including the front cover and the air intake pieces and the cap over the starter motor. I then clean again with brake cleaner, and polish with Mother’s aluminium polish. Lot of hours but I think the semi chrome shine looks good.
Paul,
Thank you for sharing the information about your technique.
Best.

Hey Brook, You’re great! My perfectly running 94 100gs is transitioning to an 89 r100gs. I thought the project would be easy but never anticipated BMW would make so many changes in detail to a model run nearing its end. The electrical systems between the 89 and the 94 are very different and, it appears, the GS models are the only ones with these changes. Thanks for your work and cheers, Bill

Bill,
Indeed, the airheads were updated a great deal from 1970 through 1995.

Brook.
Very nice. Just wondering what sort of media you used to blast the front cover?
Mike,
I used 80 grit glass beads from Harbor Freight.
Best.
