1983 BMW R100RT Assemble And Install Fairing & Windscreen

I’m converting the original RS fairing to an RT. I had the fairing, front fender, side covers and gas tank painted in a two tone paint scheme, code 130, used on the RS bikes; the colors are Dunkel Blue and Hell Silver. However, in tribute to the first year 1977 RS, I had matte clear coat applied to all the silver areas including the gas tank and gloss clear to all the blue areas. My painter was up for the challenge of painting the gas tank. The slight ridge between the clear and matte clear coat on the gas tank is hidden by the wide red pinstripe.

Here is what I started with:

NOTE:
Due to the poor lighting, some of the dark blue parts appear black in the photo below.

The RT fairing includes side storage boxes that attach to the inside of the upper side panels, but I do not plan to use them as they fit too close to the gas tank for my comfort.

And here is what I ended up with.

    • Hi Scott,

Well, the joy of building a bikes also comes from putting lots of miles on your work. šŸ™‚ Dirt can be removed.

      Best.
      Brook.

  1. Well done Brook. Would be my dream come true to rebuild mine from tires up. Alas I’m missing your knowledge expertise and probably some tools. Will be making a decision regarding my K1100LT some day. But will be keeping the 76 R/90 mongrel of mine as long as I am able. Enjoyed all your posts and efforts to document so well. Do you suppose some of your documentation on the 73 R75 could be used for repair guidance to the R90 when needed?

Stay safe sir. All the best,

    Danny O’

    • Hi Danny,

You will find information about a 1973 R75/5, 1975 R75/6 and 1977 R100RS on my site. The 1976 R90 fits between these. The information in them has application to your project. Where BMW made changes in parts from 1973-1977, you can find the appropriate information in my documentation. I’d suggest checking the MAX BMW parts fiche to see which years used the parts in your bike and use that year’s documentation for assistance.

      I hope that helps.

      Best.
      Brook.

  2. Mon Brook,

thank you letting us participate your great work. It is always a great pleasure to have a look on it.

I have great respect for the commitment with which you documented your work. Your documentation helps me a lot with the maintenance of parts of my R60 / 6 that I have not yet worked on.

    Thank you!

    Lupo

  3. Oh Boy, Am I happy. I’m a yacht captain and because of Covid I have not been able to get home for 16 months. In two weeks I can so rather than flying we are going to drive an old and quite shagged out car from SW Spain to our home in France where my poor stripped down 85 R80RT has been gathering dust in a garage for three years because when I could get home there were other commitments such as seeing to our new roof. I have been losing sleep over worrying about putting all the fairing and other plastic pieces back properly without damaging them. I shall watch this over and over. Thank you.

    • Hi Shaun,

I’m glad to hear you will be able to make your way back home. I’m sure not being able to go back has been very stressful to you. Being able to work on this project has reduced my anxiety and stress since the outbreak began. I hope being able to work on your project is as therapeutic for you.

      Best.
      Brook.

    • Hi Ran,

Thank you. I do like the two-tone paint work and the unconventional white wheels (an idea I borrowed from the wheel color used on the R65LS).

      Best.
      Brook.
